The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has disclosed that under the Buhari-led Federal Government, power supply in the nation has improved with an increase in generation from 4,000MW to 7,000MW, transmission wheeling capacity from 5,000MW to 8,000MW and distribution from 2690MW to 5,222MW. According to him "the report of our survey and feedback mechanism confirms that many of you now have public power for longer hours compared to 2015 and now run generators for shorter periods compared to 2015 and you now spend less money on diesel to power your generators".

IFashola made the disclosure on Monday, 12th November 2018, during the Ministerial Press Briefing in the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, Mabushi, Abuja. He assured that the ministry was still in the process of delivering additional generation of 215MW from Kaduna Power Plant, 240MW from Afam IV Power Plant, 40MW from Kashimbilla Power Plant, 30MW from Gurara Power Plant in the near term and 700MW from Zungeru Power Plant and 3, 050MW from Mambilla Power Plant expected down the line.

He said the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has lined up over 90 transmission projects completed to date with Apo, Mayo Belwa, Damaturu, Maiduguri, Odogunya and Ejigbo Transmission Substations being among the recently inaugurated ones. He added that over 100 distribution injection substations have been commissioned by the distribution companies and a distribution expansion programme to be funded by the Federal Government was also expected to improve investments in the Discos to enable them deliver more stable and reliable power to the people.

The minister also noted that evidence of the ministry's success has been captured in the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Report for Q2 of 2018 which shows a growth of 7.5% in the electricity sector.

The Permanent Secretary, Power, of the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Louis Edozien, who responded to some questions asked at the briefing, said in the power value chain, the distribution is responsible for channeling revenue upwards to transmission and generation. He identified three factors that frustrate this revenue channeling to include energy theft, tariff adjustments and inadequate investments.
