Following the current power situation in the Nigeria Power Sector, the newly inaugurated Governing Board of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has pledged to work with TCN to tackle the challenges of power transmission, to improve bulk power delivery in the nation.

The Chairman of the 14-member Board, Engr. Bukar Bulama Buni made the pledge in his opening remarks, during the First TCN Board Retreat on Friday, 24th and Saturday 25th June 2022, at Fraiser Suites, Abuja.

Engr. Buni who said the new Board was inaugurated at a crucial time when the nation’s electricity supply was at its lowest ebb, with numerous challenges in the sector, assured that with commitment and determination of members of the Board and TCN Management as well as cooperation from other stakeholders, TCN would surmount its challenges as there was no other option than to succeed. 

According to him, the Two-Day Retreat was to enable the new Board members acquaint themselves with operations and challenges of TCN, noting the significant role of electricity in the industrial and socio-economic development of the nation.

Speaking at the occasion, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Engr. Dr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, said that the Board Inaugural Retreat was aimed at providing a comprehensive overview of the structures, functions, operations, status and roles of the Transmission Company of Nigeria and other related agencies in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

In his words “in this Retreat, we are expected to hear from industry experts, the regulator, permanent secretaries, chief executive officers, executive directors and some general managers in TCN.”

Engr. Abdulaziz used the occasion to appreciate the new Board members and expressed hope of a mutually beneficial working relationship, describing their assignment as a call to national service.

The Retreat witnessed paper presentations and lectures from TCN Management, experienced industry players on diverse topics such as Understanding the Dynamics and Expectations of the Board, Power System and ongoing Capital Projects, Fundamentals of System/Market Operations and SCADA. Others include Functions and Responsibilities of Board in Major Government Organizations, Rudiments of the Power Sector; Market and Commercial overview as well as Multilateral and Development Agencies (MDAs), among others.

The event provided Board members with the opportunity to appreciate the day-to-day activities and the internal workings of TCN and its challenges.

The forum also featured Question and Answer sessions where many concerns were clarified and areas of the Board intervention to improve operational efficiency in TCN within and outside the nation was x-rayed.

Other members of the TCN Governing Board include Engr. Mohammed Wasram, Mr. Ahmad Talba Imamudeen, Mr. Nsima Udo Ekere, Mr. Abdulkarim Babatunde Disu, Engr. Gazali M. Tukur, Mr. Osagie Ediale, Mr. Ali Haruna, Mrs. Appolonia Okigbo, and Mr. Clement Omeiyabaiye. Also on the Board are, Mrs. Aisha Omar, representing Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mr. Alex Okoh Director General and representing the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Engr. Nnosike representing Federal Ministry of Power and Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, MD/CEO TCN, representing Executive Management TCN.
